It can be traced 2,000 years, with the Celts believing that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and dead would be blurred. Halloween also arose due to the influence of Christinanity, with Pope Gregory III designating November 1st as All Saints’ Day, or All Hallows' Day, to honor saints and martyrs.
The night before, October 31, became known as All Hallows' Eve, before it evolved into its modern equivalent.
The origins of treat-or-treating.
This tradition has roots in mediaeval "souling", where poor people would visit homes and offer prayers for the dead in exchange for food. In Scotland and Ireland, children used to don costumes and perform for treats, a practice known as guising.
